We decided to ditch the boat for a few days and discover the nearby coastal village of Sayulita. Packing our backpacks, we headed out to catch the bus. We took the local bus to the freeway where we had to get off, frogger across the freeway and wait for another bus headed north. Two gringos with backpacks standing in the sun at the side of the freeway must be a funny site to Mexicans! However, we did have a couple stop and ask us for directions in Spanish! Between hand gestures and spanglish, we were able to direct them toward the missed La Cruz exit.
Arriving in Sayulita just a short time after catching the bus, we quickly went to finding a hotel since we didnt make any reservations. The town was very cute, a surfers beach and a lot of American/Canadian residents. The hotels were very full near town. We went to a few before we found the delightful Aurinko Bungalows. There was a room!! The kitchen and living space was outdoors, room and bathroom inside.
The food in Sayulita was really, really good as well. We ate Veggie Burritos, Fresh Tamales and had a wonderful Italian dinner one night! We hiked around town, window shopped, watched the surfers and found this really creepy graveyard on the side of a hill. Some of the graves were sinking down into the ground and the whole thing was tiered .
The weekend was a fun getaway. I don’t think I’d go back, it was pretty Americanized in prices and general ambiance but I am glad we checked it out!
