September Update!

I’ve been lovingly reminded that I have not updated our blog lately so I thought I would force myself to sit and think about our adventures on the farm these past few months. It seems like a whirlwind of activity between not only closing down our sailing life but establishing our new home and beginning fall prep for our first winter here.

We finished most of the interior work and decorating for now and have been focused mainly on outdoors while the weather is so beautiful. We have created garden spaces, chopped down trees, hauled, split and stacked wood, drained and cleared out the big pond, weeded and pulled ferns, harvested berries and canned peaches.

Our kitties are actively mousing! We must have picked the very best kitties in the whole shelter. Our resident elder kitty Sophie has not yet warmed up to the idea of sharing her space but we are hoping by winter she will learn to cuddle with the others.

Our recycle area is implemented and we now have a worm compost bin as well. Our last trip to the dump only cost $5! A few fun things .. (well it’s all fun but..) We bought 2 Gunnera manicata (Dinosaur Food) plants to plant next to our little fish pond near the porch. They now look like this first photo but soon will look like the 2nd pic below and hopefully grow to 8 feet!

We have a gnome home in our front garden! Anticipating more of these (gnomes are good breeders) and are eagerly anticipating the ripening of our grapes and apples! A 9 hole Frisbee golf course is in the works. We have had some unwanted visitors (skunks and gophers) but have also had hummingbirds, woodpeckers, butterflies, bunnies, deer and owls. We were surprised with a beautiful lily in the front yard and have enjoyed seeing the plants change and bloom.

Nope, we aren’t traveling the sea but we are working hard on our beautiful space, lavishing in a hot steamy shower and then relaxing together with a cold beer happily sitting in our rocking chairs on the back porch as the sun prepares to set = perfect.
