Green Living on Blue water

We have been anchored for over a week now and we are discovering that living aboard in Mexico is quite easy and earth friendly to boot! We are working through the provisions aboard so we don’t need much from the market besides fresh produce and ice. I prefer natural raw mono-eating anyhow as it has no fake packaging and that equals less disposal problems! We have turned off the freezer to preserve battery power. I’m not missing it much. We buy ice and place it in the refrigerator to help keep things cool. It’s working out super! I also have begun sprouting lentils aboard. They are coming along great! When we do have to run the engine, I make popcorn and hummus for snacking.

We had to re-position our solar panels as they were being shaded by the new bimini cover that we had made in San Diego. We placed them on the outside of the new frame. Now it looks like we have wings! Now we are getting enough solar energy to run our refrigerator. We bought little solar garden lights to hang on each corner of the boat. The panga fishermen don’t always see the anchor light, so we don’t want any collisions. Plus it’s a bit romantic having them glowing out there!

For inside lights we are using a fluorescent battery operated lantern. I also have a little battery operated candle for mood lighting. It’s so cute! The moon has been full this week and tends to provide a bit too much night lighting! LOL but it sure is beautiful shining across the bay.

Bathing is combined with swimming daily in saltwater, with a quick fresh water rinse. The water tends to be around 80 degrees most days. We watch the tides to make sure we are swimming in the freshest water available as we know, boats & cruise ships dump sewage in the ocean! Yuk, yuk.. double yuk but it’s a fact!
