Remembering Dan Walling

"One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." ~Carl Jung

Last week Lindsay's friend, teacher, mentor, RHS debate coach and mentor Dan Walling died in a tragic boating accident. Lindsay and I traveled to Tacoma a few weeks ago where she was able to visit with Mr. Walling and spend the day with her former debate teammates as they competed in the WA. state forensics tournament. We are now more grateful than ever that we went that day ...

Something I should have said but didn't:

~Thank you Mr. Walling ~

Thank you for helping my daughter through really hard, emotional times the last few years. Thank you for encouraging her to speak out loud for what she believes in, to debate topics she was passionate about, for teaching her to love literature and writing, for telling her she was important. Thank You for all the bear hugs, "way to go's" and "you can do it's". For always lighting up when she walked into your space.

Thank You for giving so much of your time, energy, your much to short life, to your students. I didn't know you very well, but I'm confident will see your influence in my daughter as she continues to grow and learn, encouraged by the seeds you planted as a true teacher. You made a difference and you will be missed more than you would have ever imagined.
