Kayaking the Nisqually Delta

Tad & I miss kayaking! We sold our Tarpons with our sailboat over 2 years ago! So upon discussing the purchase of new kayaks, we decided to rent a few times to see what different styles have to offer.

Tacoma's Metro Parks advertised a kayaking tour paddling through the largest saltwater estuary in the South Sound. It was supposed to be led by a Tahoma Audubon naturalist, so we thought it sounded interesting and signed up!

The weather forecast changed from good to 62 and showers a few days before! So we busted out the rain gear and went anyhow. The naturalist didn't show up .. but the kayaks & guides were there so we all geared up!

Tad was feeling a little mischievous in his skirt ...

haha .. get in the boat Tad!! ... and we were off.

Tad sat behind me so I took this pic over my shoulder - no wonder I had to paddle hard, he wasn't even trying!

We kayaked for a few hours, got warmed up and then took a beach break for a sack lunch.

One guy tried to feed me sea asparagus.

It tasted like grass.

There were a few good photo opportunities on the beach!

Just as we started feeling chilled, it was time to go back into the kayaks as the tide was starting to go out.

we tried to make a channel crossing but the water was too shallow. Then we headed back to the boat dock. Many areas were getting shallow and it wasn't uncommon to hit bottom with our paddles.

As we headed to shore it started to rain! What great luck the we were able to stay dry almost all day!

What a super fun day together!

Conclusion - we need separate kayaks...
