December 1, 2006; We left san Diego and headed for the border. Crossing over proved to be fairly easy. We stopped briefly to obtain Mexican auto insurance, exchange money and get our visas. We drove through Tiajauna and made our way to Ensenada where we stopped at a roadside hotel for the evening. We found a whole roasted chicken dinner complete with beans and rice for just $7! What a bargain!
In the morning we got back on the road and went looking for a campground. We looked at 3 campgrounds before finally settling on the 4th, Gypsies Beach Camp just south of San Quintin. The campground is in a lovely setting just behind the dunes and close to the surf of one of Mexico's finest beaches, Playa Santa Maria. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves. We stayed for 2 nights. The evenings were chilly but the sunshine during the day more than made up for it. We walked on the beach and basqued in the sunshine. Tad tried to dig for clams but found a crab instead (see photo). The little cafe in the campground served burritos and tamales for jus $1 each. Yummy!

Dec. 4, 2006; We left the campground and headed through the desert where we saw these huge mountains made out of boulders, they were incredible. I wish I would have taken photos, maybe on the trip back north. There were also these huge cacti and weird little trees called cirros (I think). We are definately not in Washington anymore!
We went through the border between Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur (halfway mark!) and settled into a small hotel in Guerrero Negro for the evening. We had the best dinner, Tad had scallops and I had shrimp.. the best seafood I have ever eaten in my life!
We are having such a wonderful time and from what we hear from other travelers, it just gets better as we travel south. Today we are headed for San Ignacio for breakfast and the over to the Sea of Cortez. I was scared at first but everyone has been so nice and helpful, we feel nothing but welcome in Mexico.
